Car Tax Disc to be axed after 93 years!

They must be confident that they know everything now about your car and its status . . . but why oh why cant they just put the cost onto petrol so that pro rata the more miles you do the more you pay

A 'pay as you drive' system through fuel would be so much better. Anybody who then uses the fuel can not possibly dodge the tax (including overseas visitors). I'd be happy paying a couple more pence per litre and not paying any VED. Might get people thinking twice about using their cars all the time too and get people out on their bikes and using public transport...which is what the govt. want, isn't it?

Why should a little old lady who drives 1,000 miles a year pay the same as a sales rep touring the country doing 60,000 miles a year?

Because what would would all those civil servants at the DVLA do for work then?

They rely on little old ladies paying too much to tax their cars to pay for schools and hospitals and won't put the difference on income tax, which is what would need to happen. Politically adding more tax on fuel is suicidal as next to fags and booze it's about the most highly taxed product you can buy already

I don't think it's right to do away with the disc. I still see many vehicles driven without, which seemingly avoid detection. you just won't know who is potentially driving illegally

In other news a check for presence of a dpf on a modern diesel was announced yesterday - will come into force February next year

There are 10,000 bureaucrats, sorry, workers at the DVLA who are all very well trained in office procedures I'm sure, so sell the buildings and move them into productive economy - what a good boost that would be!

Yeh, I worked in the public sector for 7 or 8 months (I'll remain silent on which bit of it) and saw those 'office procedures' first hand. They consist of doing work that has no real output or value but that gets passed on to someone else to rework and pass on again. Eventually it comes back to the originator and the cycle starts anew. :(

And I'm not kidding or exagerating!
