Audi S8 D2 R Reg for sale gearbox issue
Selling my audi S8 D2 Mk1 its in good condition all round, dark metalic green with cream leather interior and has most of the extras including bose system, solar sunroof, electric back seats aswell as front with memory, car has extensive service history, including cambelts, new gearbox and the usual old mots however the amount of bills from audi etc is crazy, so much money has been spent on this car in the past and under the bonnet the engine is sooo clean, its only covered 116.000 miles which is nothing for these cars, ive got a recipt with paper work for a replacement gearbox that was fitted a few years back, and this car was my daily driver but recently I got in to drive it and noticed the the display for the gears went into a solid block and even though reverse engages and it drives it seems to stay stuck in one gear, after driving for a bit if i switch off and start again its back to normal, gear changes are soo smooth with no lagging so could be low gearbox oil etc, i have no idea and no ones checked it as I have another 2 s8s and cant afford to spend any money, it has mot and tax, will need new pads soon, and handbrake cable needs adjusting, everything else works fine and the car was superb im every way, apart from this gearbox issue that seems to have happened since weather has gotten colder! Im open to sensible offers over £1000 for it, as I believe this car with a few quid spent is going to be superb, and massive history and extras etc, bargain. hnicou@hotmail.com

Get the fault codes read - could be as simple as a faulty F125 range select switch on the side of the box. Easy and relatively cheap fix if so

Thanks for the advice Adrian, Ive got two other S8s which are both 40v facelifts and basically was using this car alot more than the others, one of my 40vs is lowered and remapped, different exhaust etc and its soo raw whereas this 32v was soo smooth and pretty silent!!! so a much more cosy cruiser etc, anyway the gearbox issue just happened about a week ago then it was fine for days and I tried to drive it earlier today and it happened again, so just thought I would try and sell it as it is and the new owner can sort it out, hopefully i get some interest because its a really nice car and worth saving. Regards

As Adrian says, 99.99% sure it's the F125 switch. Had this issue on mine (all gears lit up on display) before I knew what the issue was. Personally, I'd spend the £110 on a switch from the forum sponsors and then sell it fully working. You'll get more interest than for a car with a dodgy gearbox. If it's as good as you say with all the work done on it, you should be able to get much more for it. There is a '97 S8 on Pistonheads for £2,450.

Yes, symptoms are very similar to the failure of my F125 switch as well. At least get a VCDS on it and get the fault diagnosed. If it's had a new gearbox and been looked after properly than it shouldn't be a big deal. But it's not worth a lot with an undiagnosed gearbox fault.
Where are you, perhaps one of us with a VCDS could help? |
Again Thanks for the advice guys, really appreciate it, I was looking through ebay to find a cheap Audi electronic diagnostic machine as ive seen them as little as £15, does anyone know if these work as I would rather buy one and have it for future use rather than take the car to a garage and no doubt end up paying even more just for a diagagnostic check! Thanks

There are usually problems with the cheap diagnostic tools. But somewhere on this forum there's a register of members with a VagCom/VCDS and their locations. If you'd let us know where you are, someone will probably come and do it for a pint.
