Noticed this on the back of the rear view mirror.

Anyone seen anything like this before?

Nope haven't noticed it on yours (but didn't see the car yet lol) or mine, but it looks like the sun has done its worst!

I think it's where the map lights are.

If that's possible....

It most definitely is possible, it happened.
Building is being seriously modified as a result, at great expense.

Mine is exactly the same. I thought it might have been years (and 100,000 miles) of having an air freshener dangling around the mirror and the string swaying from side to side on every bend and rubbing against it but perhaps not

The coating feels rubbery, so I'm wondering if I can strip it off with some thinners, mix up some black and white plasti dip to the correct colour and repaint it.

Or just leave it as I can't really see it.

How hard is it to remove the mirrors?

Well yours doesn't seem to be as bad as mine

Same here but thanks God not as bad

I had a look at the back of mine and it looks ok, but yes the cause is the rubber surface delaminating. I wonder if its caused by the mirror being constantly adjusted in the past rather than the sun.
