Homelink Retrofit

Has anyone done or came across info on how to do it.

Any other info pertinent to how it works or interfaces to garage door opening would be greatly received.

Thanks

I've done just a very quick research, but stopped after seeing the cost going into hundreds of pounds. One thing I remember is that your garage door/automatic gate receiver must be compatible with Audi's equipment and even if my BFT Gates are, they still need a special module which costs another few hundreds, so I end up sticking a remote on hook and loop discs under drivers armrest and it works like a dream, can't see it, but it's there and it does the job very well +++

Mmmm was hoping it wouldn't be a fortune but I guess should have known better.

There's a thread, I think on Audipages, where someone used a spare button on the dash to a remote door opener unit, though that was a D2.

Are there any unused/blank buttons that you could hijack for the OEM look?

It depends a lot from what gates/garage doors you have.
Used interior light module with home link buttons is 90quid, control unit 200quid and then a module for your GD, this depends on manufacturer. As far as I remember, BFT wants something like 400-700quid for the gate module, stupid.

If your one is in the region of 100-150quid then you can do the whole project for up to 500quid +++
I would still prefer to spend this money for something else as the remote under the armrest does the job very well

Thanks Marcin,

Food for thought, who is BFT?

I don't know what the garage has at the mo as its a house I'm hoping to buy, so will have to see how that works out.

BFT is one of the top 3 (order of who is 1st and who is 2nd depends on personal preference and experience) gates/garage door automation manufacturers. Hence they gear isn't always cheap.

I'm sure you can cheaply hack it, but my idea is way much simpler and quicker, no control units, wiring etc.

What you do is buy the interior light unit with home link button.
Take all the internals from your remote. Fit them behind the light unit, even a hot glue will do. De-solder open/close button (my gates you open and close with one same button)
Take some wires and solder the home link button to the remote's pcb using these wires and that's it.
Simples ;)

Ironic that I've got Homelink but will never get the chance to use it, my garage can't accomodate the D2, never mind the D3 :(

If there are bits you need that can be removed and leave my car looking untouched I'd be willing to discuss Del ;)

All you do guys is swap the interior light unit and that's it +++
Unless if Del wants to go full on, then he will need your home link control unit which is the size of headlight range control unit. It's the gate/garage door control unit which needs to be compatible with audi's unit. Audi's bits all are the same.
