I'm a bit confused - did the D3 have a 4.2 5V petrol engine at all?

sure did - there were originally 32V V8 engines in the D2 then this changed to 40V V8 engines in the FL D2 and on into the D3's :

I've often thought about a supercharged D3 as kits are available for other 4.2 40v Audi's. Only about a month ago I was at Two Counties Motor Show and there was an APR supercharged 4.2 S4. While chatting to the owner I said that I've only seen superchargers on the 2.8 30v A4's using a PES kit and he commented that PES are lesser quality to APR kits.
