D2 S8 FL Rear Brake Upgrade

I just had the front W12 calipers, carriers, 385 discs from Guy - daviesbike - Many thanks.
I plan to make the front upgrade next weekend so why not change the the rears as well ? I m not very "technical" and wont be making the upgrades myself because of lack of knowledge etc :D
My plan is to find a suitable set that can go on the rear end of my D2 S8 FL 2001
Question is: will the rs6 c5 rear set work ? After my research on google I have only found a rs4 b7 rear brake upgrade on a D2 however I would prefer the slightly larger 335 disc that the rs6 uses.
What exact rs6 parts do I need to perform the above rear upgrade ?

As far as I know the rear RS6 set won't fit as they have the wrong disc/caliper offset.
Mike (Conan) was trying to get this setup to work on his but I don't think he finished it off. I'm sure he'll be along to confirm/deny at some point.

The B7 upgrade needs the rear hub caliper bolt holes drilling out to accommodate the larger bolt size and you'll also need the handbrake cables from an A8L but the rest of it is a straight swap.

Let me know what pads you're proposing to use for your fronts. I'm still undecided due to the overwhelming response from my 8 pot Brembo thread

So is there an easy 'bolt-on' rear brake upgrade for the FL D2 S8?

I think Scotty from A8-freunde did his D2 rear brakes with some RS6 rear brakes from what i remember then put bentley covers on them to match the front W12 brakes like I have done

I do indeed have a set of RS6 rears on my project car, but it's not a straight forward fit. The carriers have the same bolt pattern but they are about 3 mm out for offset. I had 3mm machined of the mating faces of the carriers to sort out the offset then found that the bolt points on the hub carrier meant that I had to have the disks reduced in size. I cant remember how much they were reduce as I did a guestimate first time and it wasn't quite enough. So had a bit more taken off and still had to file a small amount out of the gullet of the carriers as they were 'just' rubbing.

I wouldn't do it again as my PF D2 now feels a bit over-braked at the back (I have an AP racing custom set up on the front, 6 Pots with 385mm disks and DS2500 pads with are retina detaching). I also had a staggered tyre set up with 10s using 285s on the back and 8s using 255s on the front so understeer with over-braked rear end made it interesting with the back end braking loose very easily and the ESP going nuts!

A mild upgrade could be using the longer carriers from the D2 armoured car, and either trying to source cheaper D2 armoured car discs or some other discs of similar size that will fit the D2. The D2 armoured car rear calipers are the same as other D2s so no new calipers needed.
armoured carrier part: 4D0615425D
discs are 310mm by 22mm

I wanted to go for the S4 B7 set up. Just a thought, instead of drilling out the D2, could inserts be used in the B7 carrier so they will accept the smaller size D2 bolts?
Just in case you ever want to go back to the standard brake set up.

Small update
All parts for the front brake upgrade have been reconditioned.

thebluewhale - I had some cheap pads from TRW

I also decided to change to wheel colour from "gunmetal" ish to black - I personally think black will look better with red calipers.

Audi centre cap logo - also repainted.

With the rears now.
Whats on the rear of the d2 w12 ?

Architex_mA8tey 22nd August 2014 02:30 PM

I know that there was a Girling 310 x 22mm disc option for the armoured car at the rears on a D2 but I dont think the W12 had those.
There was either a Girling 269 or 280mm x 22mm rear disc option otherwise so I would guess the W12 was the larger of those 2

Goran,

I can't see why not and it would probably be a better solution than drilling out as the caliper mounting points are very close to the edge of the hub.

Let me know if it works if you go down that route +++

Thanks, will let you know when I eventually get round to it, so many things to sort out on this car :)
