Winter alloys?

Hi all.

I recently put a post on re some 20" alloys on Ebay (PT No 4H0601025AG).

I looked this part up on ETKA last night and it stated "alloy/wheel for winter tyre".
Can anyone explain what a winter alloy is? Does this mean for some reason you can't put a summer tyre on this rim?

I've never heard of specific winter rims before?

Hope I'm not the only one?

Me neither, can't see the benefit over "normal" rims - it's the tyres that matter.

There is no such a thing like winter alloys, unless they have some different coating as salt/grid isn't that good for alloys from what I have heard.

The only thing noticeable is the design/look of them, look at mattylondon's wheels, this is perfect example of winter alloys, and personally I think they look amazing as a winter wheels +++

The ones you posted link to ARE NOT winter alloys or winter alloys only.

the only thing i can suggest is that many "winter rims" are both narrower and also sometimes have smaller diameter perhaps?

Thanks Marcin

I also have no idea what makes a winter rim special, except they are usually smaller. So a 9x20" seems massive. Audi lists that rim for winter tires, not specifically a winter rim if that makes any difference.

A lot of rims for winter tyres are, or have been, steel, so maybe that's part of the explanation for the wording. My PF S8, when I looked into it, did have a specific 16" winter steel wheel, though I used 17" alloys.

They are also, as noted above, often smaller with deeper profile tyres, so maybe these are for a specific model/range to complement possibly larger diameter summer wheels whilst still fitting over the brakes?

You can have the same rim as winter and as regular, Only difference I can see is:

4H0 601 025 AG winter, colour code 8Z8
4H0 601 025 N regular, colour codes Z33 & 8Z8

The size, offset are the same maybe difference is in coating.

I think thats what it is guys, the coating. Salt makes alu corrode faster or whatever. If you look all wheels in that photo are marked as winter wheels and this aren't winter style wheels.
