Infa red key entry how to get working?

How do i get my infa red sensor key to work? Ive got 3 of the large type infa red keys, and replaced the batteries but have never been able to get them to operate?

Any tips?

Car is a 1995 A8 4.2 auto if it helps

Infra-red!?

I've never seen an infra-red key. Do you mean the wireless (radio) key fobs?

For those, you need to have another working key in the ignition (switched on), then you follow the procedure with the keyfob you're trying to program in the door.

EDIT: From memory, I think this is the procedure that usually works for me:

(Note, if you're programming more fobs, it's slightly more complicated. You need to indicate the fob memory number by the number of presses of the new fob button, with a second or so pause between each press).

Ah, ok. I have no idea in that case, sorry.

My previous D2 A8s ('96 and '97 models) both had wireless (radio) keys. I've never seen an infra-red key before!

I would guess the procedure is the same, except of course the infra-red key fob would have to be pointed at the receiver, wherever that may be.

Reciever is like a small square blob on the black glossy part of the front door rear frames

Learn something new every day.

I had no idea any 8's had infra-red remotes for the central locking.

One thought ... have you managed to confirm the fob is working and transmitting?

I have one of these for testing RF fobs, but it works with IR remotes/fobs too:

That listing was the cheapest. Seems to be in stock, though it does state 'discontinued'. There's plenty of them on Ebay though:

Or any IR tester should do.

You can sometimes use a video camera to test IR transmitters too, assuming the camera is sensitive to IR (many are).

I have 3 of them keys so im assuming at least one should work!! Cheers for the link though

Reading the book, each key programs each drivers:

Seat position
Headrest position
Seatbelt position
Steering wheel position

How cool is that, to see all those things move about when you open the car!!

It's certainly is. I've had that ('memory seat') feature on all my 8s. It's great, especially when someone else has moved everything (such as a garage mechanic) to watch it all go back automatically as you open the door! :)

The system has to be switched on for it to work though (the red on/off switch in the driver's door)
