Are these noises normal?
Im presuming they are but i thought id double check anyway!
When i unlock the car sat in the drivers seat i can hear a whirring. I noted as i opened the boot the other day it is coming from that area. More so behind the boot trim. When i turn the car off and remove the key, a loud whirring (like an elecric handbrake winding in the piston) from the passenger ish front of the car behind the dash. Any thoughts? |
Central locking pump?
The locking and unlocking should be almost silent when in the car. |
That would explain the whirring on unlock, although its not that audible unless you have your head in the boot (thats how i heard it)
Wonder what the one is when you take the key out?? Chris |
The central locking pump is normally audible. Not enough usually to hear it with the engine running, but sat in silence in the driver's seat, if I lock/unlock my door there's a gentle mmmmm sound from the pump in the boot.
As for the noise after turning the engine off and removing the key, I get those too, though again, I would say they're barely audible, not loud. I suspect they're HVAC related. There are a number of motors and solenoids that control ventilation flaps, which I think return to a 'home' position when you switch the ignition off. I believe there's also a coolant pump, to circulate coolant to the HVAC in the 'rest' mode. It's possible that may be running momentarily too. |
Hmm yes, the flaps will rotate and close once the car is shut down. Good way to demonstrate this is to use the 'rest' function and you will hear the flaps open again. Could be this?
