This is odd because my car has a similar issue, but its in all gears and at any range.
The issue I have seen goes like this.
Take foot off the gas, the car slows down as normal - RPM are smooth
Put you foot down hard, car engages fine, the RPM's engage and stay locked.
If you are driving along, and as with any A8 you are hovering at a low RPM, and you put you foot down a little, you hear the engine RPM rise, but then, as it tries to keep going, there almost seems to be a clutch slip, the RPM jumps, then engages again.
In addition, if you are trying to maintain a speed - 30, or 40, you will see the RPM need jumping 200rpm ever so often.
This isnt a massive issue for me, but it can be irritating. It only seems to happen when the cars at low RPM. The worst one is when you are stuck in 50mph contraflows on the motorway. Cars in 5th, and right at the lower end of the gear, and it just sit there jumping. Change to tip mode and put it in 4th seems to be the only solution.
I had thought it was the Torque converter on the box that was causing this.
