However, the numbers are available in the Instrument Cluster [ECU 17]. If you have VCDS, Measuring Group Block 5, values 3 & 4 have the distance and days to next service.

I'm not aware what triggers the display of the 'next service' in the car but at least you can get a clue from the ECU measuring blocks.
