So I've found the problem causing the knocking/rumbling noise - it was the exhaust
I had replaced the two joining couplings just after the cats some time ago and the O/S pipe had relaxed over time and was too close to the heatshield, about 1/2" away. When cornering etc the engine moved just enough to allow a small bolt sticking out of the zorst to knock the body.
