If the DIS is showing that boot is open maybe there is a piece of luggage stuck between boot and body putting too much pressure on the lock so that it does not unlock or open. Have somebody sit on boot to put downward pressure, try locking, unlocking car again and keep the pressure on when pressing open button. If that does not help and boot is full of luggage then I think any way in will be destructive either by smashing light or cutting some metal.
And just to cover basics if he is used to only use remote and not sure about manual operation it is turn key anti-clockwise to unlock then push the cylinder in to open.
