I know in my last Nissan Skyline there was a light wire 'rope' threaded through the boot lid and a plastic tab just visible on the top edge of the liner.
the idea was that you could pull the tab from the ski hatch and release the lid that way.
It did get use at least once when the wiring to the boot solenoid failed.
all you had to do was to remove the liner and clip it back in to place once the repair was complete to be used again if needed.
If I get the project on the road it might be a job I'll look in to (with a write up on here if it works!)
