The D2 has an electric solenoid that is connected half way on a steel rod between the lock and key cylinder. Essentially one release mechanism via two different operational inputs.

The D3 has a servo motor directly on the lock that uses gears to release. Also there's a flexible steel cable from the key cylinder to lock to move a latch to release. Two separate mechanisms to release the lock. You'd have very bad luck if both failed.
