Looking at some pics of it, the Phaeton system has a lever off the bottom of the hinge which is driven by hydraulic rams.
I can't see how this all fits under the lid, so that implies the rams are inside the car

That would mean an opening right in the place where the D2 collects leaves and mud. Unless of course the bodywork is quite different to the D2 and has space for all this stuff.
No electronics shown here, but I know in the beetle there are clip-on plastic pieces which contain hall sensors that detect the piston in the ram. That might be the case here - worth further investigation
