Yes they just pry off, don't do it when they are cold as the plastic can be brittle.
If you have to do it in winter warm the whole assembly up with a hairdryer for several minutes first.
IIRC you adjust the mirror to the extreme position and then lever it off carefully with a WIDE plastic tool.
In or out can't remember  but try both and it will be obvious which gives better access, if I had to guess I'd say in and down a bit and lever off from the outside.
You'll probably hear one of the catches pop loudly off first which can be a bit disturbing then the rest follow easily. I think I last used a plastic ice scraper.

Finally: gone, but not forgotten.....
1998 D2 PF S8. Agate Grey/Platinum. Every option (I think) except electric rear seats, Tiptronic steering wheel, ski hatch, towbar & dimming door mirrors.
e.g. Cruise control, NavPlus/TV, Bose, GSM, Xenons, Solar roof, Parking sensors, Alcantara/leather everywhere of course.  (internal dimming mirror added later)
1998 (very early) Ford Focus 1.8 Zetec; ABS/TCS, Heated screen/mirrors, Aircon. Added Auto-dim mirror, Leather seats, Trip computer, Cruise control, OEM Ford SatNav with CD changer.
And before that a lot of Rover 800s, a few oddities, a lovely Triumph Dolomite 1850HL with Overdrive and way back in my schooldays an Austin Seven aka Mini 850!
