Same here .... pretty much stopped using the buttons when I upgraded to a FL S8 too.
Tip is still useful if you want to change down early for a bit more engine braking (while in 'S'), though the problem with that is you then have to move the selector to get it to go back to full auto, or wait (about a minute is it?) for it to revert back itself.
