The ROI and efficiency of GPUs isn't as good as an S9 but, as you say, much better for home use/heating. And they potentially have a better resale value if they become unprofitable to mine with.
An equipment rack is an interesting idea -- hadn't thought of that. I suppose you could just use cheap rack shelves/trays to attach the cards and motherboards to. With a 6 foot rack you could create a multi-storey GPU miner.
