I swapped the sensor over today with a brand new OEM Bosch one - identical to the one that was in it. Surprisingly easy to do, took less tha ten minutes once I had found a suitable tool (which took 45 minutes).
Once it was swapped over and securely plugged in, I replaced the battery, freshly charged. Made sure all the codes were cleared tghen went for a start attempt. Engine just span over, still not starting.
Scanned it again and got the same fault... p3007 cam position sensor g40 no signal. Cleared again and tried another start. same code. Did that three or four times until the battery was struggling to turn the engine again. Every time its the same cam sensor no signal fault.
The plan now is to try and find out which pins on the ECU connector are for the three cam sensor wires and test for continuity in case a wire has broken in the loom somewhere.
I did output tests on everything I could think of that might affect starting and everything seemed to be moving fine, swirl flap actuators, turbo actuators, EGR etc etc.
The only other thing I can think of is to remove the sensor and stick an endoscope down the hole and see if the camshat is actually moving - I'd expect that there would be some sort of unusual noise coming from the engine if one of the cam chains had snapped though!!
Has anyone got any suggestions? Am i barking up the wrong tree with the cam sensor? None of the measuring blocks are labelled on VCDS with this car, or the last two A8's so Ive no idea what I should be looking for to see if there is any signals at all coming from the sensor.
