Cars have got a lot more efficient over time.
I remember getting 30mpg out of my 1600 Cortina 40 years ago and thinking that was good.
Diesel cars were few and far between then and were also generally dirty, smelly and noisy but the mpg was good but accelleration was absymal.
Now you can get cars with decent performance that get 60mpg and even better but I prefer a bit of luxury and really don't care too much about the mpg as I don't do huge miles anyway
