Are you driving about at 55 MPH everywhere? Jeremy Clarkson drove a 4.0 V8 TDI A8 from London to Edinburugh and back again on one tank of fuel, 800 miles on Top Gear, so the 3.0 should be able to crack 1000 or get very close to it I'd imagine.
