Been to Vegas two years in a row, and am going back this year.
First of all, you need an ESTA. It will cost about £9, and will stay valid for two years. Fill it out here, there are lots of dogy websites about that will charge more and then just do it for you.

I would stay at the Wynn/Encore, nice and central and a great hotel. Vegas has the best hotels in the world, and they are very very cheap.
Flights, you can get a cheaper Delta one with a stop off. Or go BA/Virgin and it is direct (10 hours).
Getting from Vegas airport to the strip, don't get hustled, people will approach you telling you the taxi que is an hour long and you can go in a Hummer for only $xxx, take the shuttle. It is about $7, and you will see it as soon as you exit the airport.
You HAVE to visit the Grand Canyon, it is amazing. If coaches aren't your thing, hire a car as the journey is five hours long. I find Thrifty to be the cheapest, go for the option with the highest level of insurance cover, the sat nav and the tank of fuel.
Finally, have a look on Expedia or lastminute.com for flights/hotels. Bare in mind, it is sometimes cheaper to book a package flight/hotel via British Airways then just the flight on its own.
Have fun.
