Thank you all. After a chat I found that the biggest potential cost is for a new front caliper - c. £480 plus VAT for genuine VAG. As I work full time (I think that's all your waking hours these days isn't it?) I won't have time to do this myself. However, my specialist is going to see if the caliper can be refurbished and has kindly offered to phone round to get some prices for good alternatives to genuine VAG parts. Although I love the car and look after it lovingly, at the end of the day it's only worth £2k, so although it is nice to keep it all genuine VAG, there comes a point when hard economics have to be faced up to.
