Is it moving freely or do you feel springy resistance that returns it to middle position of free spot? There are springs that centres it. As you turn steering wheel spring is slightly compressed and opens hydraulic valve for power assistance. If there is no power assistance like with engine off and high resistance on wheels like on standstill you can turn steering wheel by quite a bit overcoming spring resistance before wheels start turning but as soon as you let it go it returns to centre position of free spot. If the springs are getting weak, stuck or broken this would allow for more free movement. Or if the power assistance is getting weak you would feel it more when driving. Can't really judge situation without having a feel myself but if it appeared suddenly it would suggest that something is faulty.
