I believe I have now identified which arm is causing all the noise, its the upper one that goes inwards at the back of the wheel arch on the drivers side. When stationary, with the engine off if I turn the wheel I can here a knocking sound coming from the damper mount area.

I can just about reach the steering wheel and inside the arch at the same time, now if I touch this arm and turn the steering I can feel the knock through the arm.

The joint thats playing up is the one on the damper mounting bracket rather than the outer one.

Start the car and with the PAS running all is good again, no knocking at the wheel turns normally.
