Yes, it's very marginal. Almost there.
While waiting for some bits to arrive I had a bit of a "play" with aerials and reception (tuner currently in my office on the mains). I took the stupid useless stubby (4"?) aerial that comes with the tuner and just connected a length of wire to it - centrally to make a sort of Y about a foot each side - then slung that out the window onto the bush outside. (similar dimensions to that aerial you have spare and I have on order, though even cheaper  )
Bit of moving it around and the signal strength was up a tad - 53% from 48%ish - and I can now tune some of the stronger stations. Just watching ITV1 at 88% quality though main BBC stations won't tune in.
That gives me significant hope that when it's all wired up properly I should be OK. No use testing with the car at present as it's normally parked with the rear screen aerials pointing away from the transmitter, so 50% signal strength on that is quite a surprise.

1998 D2 PF S8. Agate Grey/Platinum. Every option (I think) except electric rear seats, Tiptronic steering wheel, ski hatch, towbar & dimming door mirrors.
e.g. Cruise control, NavPlus/TV, Bose, GSM, Xenons, Solar roof, Parking sensors, Alcantara/leather everywhere of course.  (internal dimming mirror added later)
1998 (very early) Ford Focus 1.8 Zetec; ABS/TCS, Heated screen/mirrors, Aircon. Added Auto-dim mirror, Leather seats, Trip computer, Cruise control, OEM Ford SatNav with CD changer.
And before that a lot of Rover 800s, a few oddities, a lovely Triumph Dolomite 1850HL with Overdrive and way back in my schooldays an Austin Seven aka Mini 850!
