And I noticed on the D3 I had a while back that it automatically applies the brakes too if cruise is on and you accelerate downhill due to gravity, though I suspect that's quite standard nowadays.

It was always my understanding (and experience - as short as it is) that the D2 box changes down when going downhill when you apply the brakes. The manual does indeed confirm that. page 69 - Dynamic shift programme (DSP). It states " on downhill gradients, the gearbox shifts down into a lower gear when the driver presses the brake pedal. This makes use of the braking effect of the engine withour having to change down manually."
