Mine is a very slightly different design, in that there are more latches (at least 8 or 10, I didn't count) around the perimeter - that looks like it has just 4, maybe 6?
I cleaned mine even more than that, and when I reassembled it I tested it by sucking/blowing on the pipe connections (while covering/uncovering the other one with my finger).
At first there was a very slight leak, but I found one of the latches hadn't snapped shut. After closing that it was fine however hard I blew!
So maybe that's an older design that doesn't seal as well and they revised it?
Following your comments I took great care opening it and EXTREME care in removing, cleaning and replacing the diaphragm.
As noted in another thread the clips on mine are Clic-R (re-useable) and I bought the appropriate tool (£8 delivered) which both removes and re-attaches them.

I'm glad the picture was of some use. If only I was more carefull opening mine I could have re-used it, it was in good condition apart from the gunk.
But I had already bought the new one in advance.
