OK, that's very similar to my current setup.
I've had the covers off inside the boot and there are 2 speakers there, with multiple wires as you'd expect. But very little sound noticeable in the boot.
If I put the RNS in max Bass, min Treble, fully faded to rear and then stick my head over the rear seat above the parcel shelf I CAN hear some bass sound, but it's really quite faint.
Picture of one of the speakers attached, looks like 4DO 035 401 3QG.
Anyone know how you get them out so I can test voltages?
Edit: You undo 2 rather obvious Phillips screws inside the boot and they just lift up inside the cabin. Though it looks like they've been out before from markings on the paint. 
Will investigate later, but on really high volumes you CAN hear the bass, so I'm thinking it's more an RNS-d issue.

1998 D2 PF S8. Agate Grey/Platinum. Every option (I think) except electric rear seats, Tiptronic steering wheel, ski hatch, towbar & dimming door mirrors.
e.g. Cruise control, NavPlus/TV, Bose, GSM, Xenons, Solar roof, Parking sensors, Alcantara/leather everywhere of course.  (internal dimming mirror added later)
1998 (very early) Ford Focus 1.8 Zetec; ABS/TCS, Heated screen/mirrors, Aircon. Added Auto-dim mirror, Leather seats, Trip computer, Cruise control, OEM Ford SatNav with CD changer.
And before that a lot of Rover 800s, a few oddities, a lovely Triumph Dolomite 1850HL with Overdrive and way back in my schooldays an Austin Seven aka Mini 850!
