But today it's working again so I'm assuming the aerial is a bit "iffy" - ordered a spare one (less than a tenner) which has just arrived, so next time I'll swap it - if it ever happens again.
I've seen many odd messages from GPS systems, but never one that put me over 5,000 miles away!

Entirely possible if you have only two satellites for a fix. I'm pretty sure the GPS itself keeps some last position information to help when you start up. Could be that the whole unit is on its way out.
