Interestingly, over the weekend, when it got a bit colder, I found the boot more difficult to shut. At times it needed a really good slam or it didn't latch properly.
This made me wonder whether the mechanism is "gunged up" with emulsified grease and that is what's really at the heart of the problem. Having looked inside there are small moving plastic parts around the switch that could be easily impeded.

So this morning I gave the latch some serious and copious attention from the WD40 can. In the middle of squirting it in I heard a tiny movement inside the latch and a chirp from the alarm horn.
It now appears to be working perfectly in all respects, closing and opening smoothly and easily, chirping and flashing the lights.

Now, to follow the old adage, I just need to find something I can fix with duct tape. (TBH I used some earlier, on the other car )

1998 D2 PF S8. Agate Grey/Platinum. Every option (I think) except electric rear seats, Tiptronic steering wheel, ski hatch, towbar & dimming door mirrors.
e.g. Cruise control, NavPlus/TV, Bose, GSM, Xenons, Solar roof, Parking sensors, Alcantara/leather everywhere of course. (internal dimming mirror added later)
1998 (very early) Ford Focus 1.8 Zetec; ABS/TCS, Heated screen/mirrors, Aircon. Added Auto-dim mirror, Leather seats, Trip computer, Cruise control, OEM Ford SatNav with CD changer.
And before that a lot of Rover 800s, a few oddities, a lovely Triumph Dolomite 1850HL with Overdrive and way back in my schooldays an Austin Seven aka Mini 850!
