Not all parts, if you change the spec such as your headlights you need to change the coding so that the features are controlled properly.
The battery needs it's part number coding-in so the charger knows what capacity it is and the charging rate. the serial number is only entered as a way of telling it the battery is new and reset all long-term parameters to 0 - for example internal resistance, ageing etc...
The other thing to be aware of is Component Protection or CP of networked control units and compnents - this is an antitheft mechanism where the VIN in broadcast by the CAN gateway and the components makes sure theirs matches, if not they put themselves into CP mode and only the dealers can remove that.
It is not just Audi doing this, all the German makers are at it and probably others.
