I've got 144K on the clock of my D2 S8. I get it serviced properly and have the gearbox service done by a ZF specialist every couple of years or so. The cambelt is due for it's second change (probably after Xmas), but that's not such a big deal.
I'm not even thinking of changing it. Even if the gearbox did give up, I'd spend the money on getting it sorted.
