That could actually be caused by MAF sensor , which no doubt have contributed to some of the gearbox failures so get it checked out or replaced.

One thing you might want to look at is the gearbox coding.

Not sue if it is possible on early cars, I have tried all the possible codings on my 1997 S8 and it only accepts the one that was already there.
