NO, you don't!
That slot is "behind" one end of a lever arm. That end should have a flat tab on it and is between two "Walls" that run the length of the connector.
The lever arm is all plastic and only connected to the shell about halfway down ( Edit: actually at the top end). The "far" (lower when installed) end has a small ramp to latch it in place.
Basically you apply pressure on the top of the lever PERPENDICULAR TO THE WIRING and INWARDS towards the centre ( Edit: actually towards you and the top end) of the shell, between the "walls".
That will lift the other end, releasing the catch.
You do NOT press DOWN as in towards the ground in line with the cables.
You do NOT insert anything in that slot, that will actually PREVENT release.
In your "wrapped" example you'd need to slide the thin flat screwdriver a few mm down the outside, immediately under the wrapping then push on it sideways and in (Edit: and up). Best to cut the wrapping off first though.
Once you've got the bloody thing off it's obvious and you'll kick yourself for pushing/prodding in the wrong place/direction.

e.g. Cruise control, NavPlus/TV, Bose, GSM, Xenons, Solar roof, Parking sensors, Alcantara/leather everywhere of course.  (internal dimming mirror added later)
1998 (very early) Ford Focus 1.8 Zetec; ABS/TCS, Heated screen/mirrors, Aircon. Added Auto-dim mirror, Leather seats, Trip computer, Cruise control, OEM Ford SatNav with CD changer.
And before that a lot of Rover 800s, a few oddities, a lovely Triumph Dolomite 1850HL with Overdrive and way back in my schooldays an Austin Seven aka Mini 850!
