The motor does indeed control all functions of the wiper mechanism, and given its location maybe moisture has got into the connector and caused some corrosion. It maybe work disconnecting the wiring from the motor and giving both halves of the connector a good look over.
Failing that the motor is a right ball-ache to change as I did mine a year ago. It looks easy enough to remove, after all its only held in place by two bolts, but then you need to take a lot of parts off around the assembly to get thing out as its to big to fit through the gaps otherwise. Took me about two hours to replace mine, but all worked well once reassembled.
