Default Funny solvent/glue like smell

Over the past week, I've noticed a funny smell inside the car periodically. It's coming from the air vents, and it smells like glue or some sort of solvent. Obviously worrying - any ideas anyone?

I once had similar when a plastic carrier bag got wrapped round the exhaust and melted...

Yeah, my missus had the same issue, carrier bag wrapped around the exhaust. D3s have a big undertray which should prevent this sort of things from happening. Under the bonnet there is a cabin filter so maybe there is something going on around that area or engine bay it self.

Hmm, I'll have a poke around under the bonnet then, and see if I can spot anything underneath. Odd that it coincided with my battery completely draining in a matter of 2.5 hours. Probably a coincidence (I hope!)

After mentioning that bit I'd be careful you haven't got a short somewhere and that smell is burning cable sheathing, it can smell quite chemically when being burnt, does everything work as it should? Is it still making a smell?

The smell seems to have gone, or is much reduced. Everything seems to be working (apart from the driver side soft close, but that was a non-worker anyway). I've still not located the source of this.

With the warm weather, the air conditioning has been blowing a bit harder, and the smell is back (albeit not as strong). Thoughts?

The fresh air intake is at the bottom of the windscreen, if you are getting the smell through the vents whilst stationary then perhaps the source of the smell is the climate control itself. I don't know what a failing heater fan would smell like.

What happens if you press the off button, yes it will get a bit warm but does the smell stop.
Try recirculation mode and see if the smell reduces.

I had a Nissan Maxima that did this, really upset SWMBO.
We cleared it by fumigating the car with some kind of smoking bomb!!
Quite a few years back and cannot remember the details. I know I had to close everything, set the thing off and leave the car alone all day.
