Default D2 4.2 not starting

Jumped into my car on Sunday and low and behold the thing wouldn't start, got power on the dash, all lights are on, when I turn the key there is no noticeable drop in current, thought it sounded like an immobilser problem so I unbolted from where I think it is which is bolted onto the vacum pump in the boot (is that correct), opened it up ,was slightly damp and some green stuff on the electrics dried it off but still no joy, can I swap this straight over if this is the problem

not sure what you're unbolting there. Imo start blocks will normall give a imo light on the dash, rather than go out it flashes. Normally will let engine start but then cuts it after a second or so. VDS will read something like, engine start blocked by immobiliser.

The 8 is quite power hungry on start and won't even bother if the juice is too low, lights the dash and will just click when you try starting.

Battery deffo ok? if any doubt jump leads on it see if that makes any difference.
if it's still slow or nothing then under the car for the main power cable and a box, check in here make sure it's not green and powdery.

Its not the usual VAG ignition switch issue is it? Dunno if they use the same switch in the A8 but seems to be used in everything else of that era?
