Default Idle problem please help

Hi everyone I have a problem with my a8 2.8.
The idle is lumpy, the revs do not fluctuate but the engine wobbles if that makes sense. The idle is a little low but it is the same until I Rev it past 1k rpm.

The fault codes I have are
01120 camshaft adjustment 1
01121 camshaft adjustment 2

Am i rite in thinking this could be camshaft position sensors?

If so does the cam belt have to be removed to replace them?

Any other ideas will be greatly appreciated

Thanks
James

I recommend having a look at the appropriate engine service manual in the Tech Dump in the D2 common faults section.

You don't have to remove the belt to get to the back one. Not so sure about the front one, but I will have a look in an hour or so - I have a 2.8 in the workshop

Those codes don't appear to be faults with the sensors though - they are usually specific, something along the lines of "camshaft position sensor G40 open or short to ground". They sound more like the ECU knows the cam adjustment isn't adjusting properly, as it can measure that with the position sensors. If both sensors had failed it wouldn't run at all, as the ECU would have no idea what the engine was doing.

Are you using VCDS or a generic scanner though?

Yes, you can get to both without removing the belt The driver's side one on the front can be accessed just by removing the belt cover on that side.

I have ElsaWin here are fault tables for a 2001 A8 2.8 printed into a pdf.
I could not find the codes you listed.
Hopefully VCDS will give you the proper codes.

Thanks everyone for your help.

I'm thinking this maybe fuel related (normally use super unleaded)a couple of weeks ago I filled up with some cheap 95ron fuel at a supermarket as my petrol light came on and they had no super unleaded. Was the only station for miles.

I only noticed these symptoms about 50miles after filling up. The symptoms got worse the more fuel I used, this Wednesday I put Half a tank of super unleaded in and the symptoms slowly got better and have went away, yesterday and today I have had no problems what so ever! And no codes

Only time will tell I suppose

Thanks again for all your help we will see how it goes

James
