What's that burning Plastic smell?? OH Heck!!!
Ladies and Gents,
around 3 weeks ago, I was coming home one evening, and had that very thought-- what followed was a curl of smoke inside the cabin, at which point I pulled off the main road imto a side street, leaped out the car and immediately disconnected the battery!!! Stood on the side of the road, had a smoke, calm down Steve!!! Got back in the car, and managed to restart it, no burning evident now, just the smell of, managed to limp the car home and, as I had but 5 days before I went off to Indonesia to marry my now beautiful lady wife, I left it, battery disconnected. Trying to restart it this morning, and I have large amounts of non compliance!! I also note the clocks are stuck at 20 mph, 1000rpm, near temperature and just under half a tank of fuel. At least the burning smell has stopped!! So, Genii, Lords Of The '8, I;m about to do a vcds scan, does anyone have any ideas?? Short of assisting it's self ignition??? All sensible suggestions welcomed!! Humble, grateful thanks in anticipation, Steve

Further to this, would anyone know why the clocks have stuck? Will they return to their normal positions??
I'd like to think that with a blown fuse repaired, they might return to normal, I also have no dash lights at all. The HVAC system lights up, the engine fires and runs for 2 seconds, as before when the immo was playing up. As above, all help is appreciated!!

Never seen clocks stuck, or smoke in the cabin, so have to assume they are related...
I'd definitely be whipping the clocks out for a closer look so if it is them, or the loom behind causing issues....

Hi Ian,
I hoped you might attempt to assist me in my plight!! The VCDS scans, one with red herrings about low main voltage etc, and the other after clearing the bogus readings are below, the instrument cluster is looking favourite to me also, and I'll be ordering one from our sponsors asap!!

Firstly congratulations again on your marriage Steve, secondly what a rubbish thing for your 8 to do to you on your return - methinks she is jealous!
Just be careful - if you swap the cluster on a FL car I believe that the immobiliser is in the cluster also and you could get all sorts of non- start issues then complications things even further when trying to diagnose why it won't start. I would also check the ECU under bonnet areas and the relay panel under the passenger side carpets etc just to see if any of these issues are caused by damp/water ingress into any of those areas Good luck hope it turns out to be something easy to sort

Many thanks for your congrats, my lady did look stunning I thought!!!! Maybe I'm biased slightly!!! My '8 actually went wrong BEFORE I flew out to Indo, but so close I just parked it up and abandoned it. The cluster does indeed house the immo chip, and the same chip also holds the mileage, which I believe is the code that makes everything OK, blooming clever!! I actually know a man who has previously swapped that very chip out for me before, when I was having all those immo problems before, some 5 years previous. Many thanks for the heads up though buddy. OK, so,
Having been on our wonderful sponsors ebay shop, and found a set of clocks, and paying via paypal, I get an email from paypal telling me my payment has been suspended for review, as the last log in was from Indonesia, WHY review it now???
