Home Automation / integration
Well my next project is going to be an interesting one....
I've been planning an extension on my house for some time now and the longer its gone on, the more stuff I've wanted to add. The most recent 'must have' is the new trend in underfloor (water pipe based) heating. For this though, i'm going to have to rip up all my floors (including the downstairs concrete ones) and start some serious work. For this, I have to move out for a while, which I'm prepared to do. So, it turns out a mate of mine is heavily into making his own House integrated so we're getting our heads together to make it happen better. So, whilst putting in the underfloor heating, it makes sense to re-wire all the electrics, sockets lighting etc and do the job right. There is loads of kit out there to remotely switch sockets on / off but its all a bit basic. There is also some top end kit that can do *anything* but you will have to pay £1000's for it. Instead, we're building it from scratch using old fashioned circuit boards, IC's serial comms and some clever pretty looking interfaces. So far we have solutions for switching all plug sockets on/off/ups, switching and dimming lighting, monitoring and acting on temperatures for unlimited heating zones and all this is stored in databases for history trend analysis etc. we're also going to integrate current load clamps on each circuit so that we can monitor the exact drain on each circuit in the house to help drive things more 'green' CCTV and alarm systems will integrate with the same PIR's used to control low level lighting through the house, and we can control audio / video to multiple rooms from multiple sources including the ability to drive infrared signals to control other devices.... So, apart from lazy options like closing curtains and blinds, is there anything we missed? This is very much in the early stages of a work in progress, but I know there are quite a few 'techie' folks on here who might have some thoughts...

10 years ago a geek mate of mine was bored and asked me to come up witha 'project'. If it interested him he would do it.
I said I wanted him to set his house so he knows exactly how many people are in each room at any time for alarm/security purposes, to link doorbell to SMS and have webcam and VOIP( although not called that back then!) so he could see and speak to whoever rang that bell. He extended it to include proximity sensor locks on all external doors ( imagine walking up to your front door and it unlocks, walk away and its locked solid )and even using teh prox sensors to know 'who' was in each room so it could adjust central heating and lighting to personal preferences. This was 10 years ago!!! and it worked a treat! All I can offer to you is think network, network, network... you can send audio, video, and any other data you want over ethernet.. what you do with it at the other end is up to you. I method and design pattern you SHOULD read up on is SOA ( Service oriented archicteture ) Its how thw world is looking at integrating systems on many different systems. it uses a messaging based system and Enterprise 'bus' to send data around and between disparate systems. your bespoke sysytem only needs an 'interface/API' for ANY other system to talk and interact with it. happy to expand if any/all of teh above is goobledy gook!

One of the simplest methods of doing this is the 'X10' route of which there is a large following (either using your mains, wired network or wireless) to send signals around and being able to interperate these signals do many things.
I have a wireless alarm which is X10 compatible on my garage and links into a phone line so I can activate it from my mobile - also turns off and on the garage light.

Fair enough - it has improved over the last 10 years, I know I got my stuff from a UK reseller (think it was mouse2house), but true DIY is the way to go (if you have the time)

On a slightly more basic note.......why rip the concrete floors up......unless you are 7ft tall or live in an old cottage you have more than enough ceiling height to put the heating on top of the concrete or wooden floor.It also goes down much quicker and can be used straight away.
The best system i have seen ....and i have seen a few.... is the one set into polystyrene under a batterned or floating wooden floor using one long plastic pipe...personally i wouldnt put the pipes into concrete as the on off nature of heating puts a huge strain on it and the complete chaos involved in locating and fixing a leak would make it a no no for me, any money you save would be spent the first time you had a problem. If you do want solid/tiled floors in for example a kitchen use aqua board on the batterns... I used to be a tiler btw....
