Default Replacing cruise and light stalk

Hi everyone.
I am hoping someone can advise me which part number I require for my 1997 4.2 QS.
The car was 1st registered on 14th April 1997.
The part number choices I have to hand are as follows.
4D0 953 513C which seems to be for early 1997
or 4D0 953 513M which seems to be for late 1997

Any help would be greatly appreciated
Thanks
David

I went round that loop a while back, there was a way to tell IIRC from looking carefully at the existing stalk.

HOWEVER in my case the problem was elsewhere and eventually solved another way; what makes you think you need to replace it?

And before that a lot of Rover 800s, a few oddities, a lovely Triumph Dolomite 1850HL with Overdrive and way back in my schooldays an Austin Seven aka Mini 850!

What problem are you trying to solve though, or is it visibly broken?

Hi HPsauce,
Cruise control worked intermitantly when I got the car last year, then stopped all together. Tried cleaning the contacts for quite sometime but this made no difference. Saw this 6 month old light and cruise stalk being advertised by one of our forum members on e.bay (jeremyp) and decided to buy. Now I think I have the wrong stalk after reading the audipages instructions for replacement as they state there are two types for the 97 A8

Similar symptoms to me, the problem was the well-documented "dodgy capacitor" problem - fixed by replacing the cruise ECU.

Where will I find the cruise ECU or the sticky to show me?

It's a cigarette-packet sized metal box in the waterproof box full of ECU's under the bonnet - nearside by the bulkhead and wheel arch.
Unfortunately it's right at the bottom under several others.

I bought one from A8parts (not expensive) had a look in the box and gave up; paid a local Audi specialist to swap it over.

I decided that it was the controller not the stalk after doing all the things everyone else did and realising it randomly stopped without me touching the stalk at all. Not only that, it either worked or didn't - just not consistent with dirty switches.

I'll see if I can find the thread....

EDIT: Have a read here: http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/showthread.php?t=113 it covers most of what you want to know, even what I paid the garage!

You'll note that I had had my stalk replaced once (professionally) a while back - I think that was a genuine switch fault as "some" functions worked. Then the box was the next problem
