Default What is the 'death rattle'?

Like most D2 '8s, mine exhibits a loud rattle when starting on a cold morning (not often at this time of year though, even in Scotland). It only lasts for a second or two, but what causes it?

I've recently had a new cam belt and associated bits and pieces fitted, so should I be concerned, can I do anything about, or should I just learn to live with it?

Planned mods: auto-dimming rear view mirror, dash cam (as steamship's), fit the ski hatch, refit philips drl's (or maybe not - nope, definitely not - horrible botch!).

Mine has this sometimes. Camshaft adjuster seems to be the most likely cause.

But mine only seems to happen if I use the car every day and then it rattles the next morning when I start it. I'll not drive the car for a week or so, go to start it and it starts smoothly with no rattle.

Heavier oil might help unless you're already using it. 5w40.
Ester oil might help too, apparently it stays on metal components longer before draining down. electrostatic interaction with metal or something.

Life is a circle…often the same one, and we can all be goldfish at times. I'd have far less work if clients could remember what to do all the time!

Is there an aux air pump that runs briefly on first start to get the cats up to speed? a possible option for start up noise perhaps?

Ford Capri Laser: noisy, slow, thirsty, bouncy, no buttons but it always sounds like it’s REALLY trying and I can’t help but chuckle when it parps and boings along. And people of a certain age stare at it with a wistful look in their eyes that clearly says…I had one of them. And I sold it because of the kids

If you wanted to try and oil based option to see if it improves it, Fuchs Titan Pro Race S in a 5w40 is what I've used in mine for most services.
