A8 D3 4.2 Tdi - First thoughts....
....were horrific. I missed the Q7 something chronic, and the already smaller load carrying capacity of the A8 is compounded seriously by the inclusion of the fridge in the boot for rear passengers (that I dont have)
The small list of niggles became more like the definitive guide to every common problem an A8 can ever have. Even fitting the AMI became a chew on as the MMI version was too old to support it, and after hours of upgrading it was only the following day whilst driving I noticed the bluetooth module was no longer with us....  . I couldnt rejoice in the sound of lovely tunes as the AMI USB lead I got off Ebay turned out to be faulty, and then, to really cap it all off, when I finally got that replaced, it turns out one of the key B&O speakers is fried making it sound like the sound is being played through a vacuum cleaner hose with paper wedged lengthways in the end.  If I'd been offered 10K for it this time last Monday I'd have bitten both their arms off. The V5 took so long to come back (arrived today) that my rights to my cherished plate expired in the process, which was almost a sign there and then Add to that the fact that the discs are so worn I think I can achieve more braking force tilting up the sunroof than pressing the middle peddle. How it passed an MOT a few weeks ago with no advisories is verging on being a matter for the police. Anyway, I had some serious motorway mileage to cover last week, so with the S4 parked up for sale, and the S8 having a well earned rest I took to the highways in the A8 in anger. I have to admit it was immeditely a huge plus point to have Adaptive Cruise back, and for it to be working perfectly. The government could save millions if they simply raise signs only where the motorway is still 70, rather than setting up a whole load of kit every time it drops to 50 for roadworks. In 50 zones, the majority of which seem to come with average speed checks now, the ACC is brilliant. Set to 50 and let it deal with the muppet in front who does 60 all the time, but 45 through the cameras...  I know I seem obsessed with sunroofs, but it was nice to get it open this week as the weather has been quite inviting. The fresh air, heated seat on and B&O blasting out (of 13 speakers, and fluffing out of 1). Economy. Another favourite topic. I do quite a bit of commuting and whilst I can afford to drive around at 20mpg, it just doesnt make much sense. 30 seems a more realistic place to be, balancing the need to not max out the credit card for a journey to London, with having enough horses to deal with the peasants in front. The Q7 was returning around 29/30 with its 3.0 Tdi engine. The 4.2 Tdi Q7 does about 5 less than that, but does get more boot as its good for it  The 4.2 Tdi D3 seems to dislike returning less than 30. If you spank it really hard, you can get it down to 25 for a bit, but it creeps back up when you're not watching. A plod on the motorway will see it nudging up towards 35. More crucially, thats over 600 miles on a tank which is a massive bonus. Filling up a time consuming ballache, as well as being expensive, especially with all those choccy bars on the counter  For a V8 with twin turbos, its not really a push you back in your seat experience - but then even the W12 doesnt really do that either other than from standstill. They're both smooth and refined yet both have a similar 'surge' characteristic where when the speed, gear and revs are just right they both gallop forward with a satisfying whoosh. The difference is, the 4.2 Tdi uses literally half the fuel doing it  With a remap, it would be a real beast I'm sure. It is already noticably quicker than the 3.0 Tdi, without being massively more thirsty. The improved audio refinement of having 8 cylinders over the 6 in the 3.0 Tdi is worth the uplift in cost alone.  I've got a few niggles to sort: the auto open boot, new brakes, B&O speaker, drivers door soft close and lock button, fingerprint sensor, Front PDC Sensor, Rear view mirror and the stupid tyre pressure monitoring. Add to that a service, gearbox flush and possibly new wheels and she'll be well sorted. As we all have access to the a8parts inventory of second hand parts, even a lengthy list like this doesnt have to cost stupid money to get a car right I do  the colour combo on this car, and although I'm still in two minds whether the wood steering wheel is 'a bit much' in the already colourful cabin, but its an easy change if desired.I still miss having a Q7, and I foresee me having another one, but whilst a decent high spec Q7 is rare as hens teeth and mega bux, I'll continue to enjoy my frugal, but not slow, soot chooker

Well, brand new center dash speaker has arrived courtousy of A8parts
Less than £100. Bargain. Genuine Danish Finest with B&O branding Also, replacement looks *easy* - In fact, easier than replacing any of the other speakers in the car, just pop a couple of bits of the top of the dash and it unscrews.... Will update with photos in a new thread when me, the car, the speaker and 10 minutes of spare time all come together
