Default D3 on a budget

Later this year I maybe in the market for a D3 diesel to replace my current D2 3.7 QS.

Thing is the budget is going to be very tight, so I don't care about mileage as my current car will tell you. As long as the condition reflects its mileage then I would not expect it to be mint cosmetically either.

So the question, can it be done, a D3 4.0 or 3.0TDi for 5K? hopefully prices will fall throughout the summer.

I know my D2 is worth nothing in trade, but I wonder what it would be worth privately. it will be on 190K miles by the end of August, MOT till May 2014, every single receipt/MOT etc. in a folder several inches thick going back to the PDI 12 years ago.

I'd avoid the 4.0TDI.. a 3.0 with a map is about as quick and much less likely to fail.

Though, TBH.. you could probably get a bit newer/better specced 4.2 petrol for similar money then too.
