Question Cycle To Work scheme: best bike for £1k

All,

Thinking of taking this up - stalled back in June when I last had an opportunity. Want a good stiff road bike for my hefty 6'5" 16.5stone frame. Websites keeps drawing my eye back to the Giant Defy 1, but don't have a clue really. Am restricted to halfords and cyclesolutions.

Thoughts?

Most places will take the vouchers, will they not..

The Defy 1 is a decent bike, my mate has one. Depends on how much time you'll spend on it, and whether you want a 'road' bike or a hybrid if it's more for the commute.

I want a quick, light and stiff road bike for fitness and long weekend rides - unlikely to commute.

Not sure our scheme allows anything other than Halfords and cyclesolutions.

Hi Zip, I have a similar issue to you in that I'm larger than average (6ft 7in and 18st) so settled for a Cube Aim 29 earlier this year. A big sturdy mountain bike felt much stronger than a hybrid, all I did was fit Schwalbe Silento tyres as most of my travel is on tarmac but they're perfectly fine for tracks and the like. I rode a Marin mountain bike for years and while it served me well it felt flimsy compared to the Cube.

From the look of this add they're available through Halfords cycle to work scheme now as well........

See if your work will allow any other company rather than Halfrauds and Cyclesolutions.

If you're looking for comfort for long weekends then a stiff race bike is possibly wrong for you, they can be very unforgiving on a long ride.

Any suggestions? Assume I know nothing....

Touring orientated bikes are more comfortable for long haul. Not sure what Halfords and Cyclesolutions have available but will have a look later

Here's a tip
If you are buying from Halfords join British Cycling (basic scheme) costs about £21 for the first year, you will then be able to get a 10% discount from Halfords, then wait until they are doing the 10% discount promotion, there have been a few in recent weeks, then use a Quidco voucher for a further 3% off. This should bring the price of a £1000 bike down to under £800 and the savings can pay for helmet, lights, shoes, lycra etc.

This or this from Planet X seem to be a popular choice on the C2W scheme

Cheap as chips from Wiggle but not bad spec for the price Click

Or check out Ribble too.. The Gran Fondo or the Sportive jobs are good spec for the price.

It's a Fondo that I'm on, the XL with a longer stem and at 6'2 and 14 stone it's quite handy out on the road.
