Default Gearbox fluid & filter change

I've booked my S8 in for a preventative gearbox fluid and filter change. The garage were brought to a halt by having to potentially remove the down pipe to get access to it. Apparently the the off-side pipe is a bit of an obstruction and with the fixings being rusty they are exercising caution.

They will do it but it's a longer job than anticipated.

Is there another way to access the gearbox or does it require quite a bit of dismantling of exhausts pipes etc?

If it's FL bits need moving to get the bottom off the gearbox, PF is accessible.

My garage did both my PF and FL D2's without much drama luckily.

It's facelift. They are prepared to do it but weren't aware of the complexity of getting to the box and hadn't allocated enough time today.

They don't get any D2 S8's in so it's a learning curve for them as much as me.

Booked in for a couple of days next week and they can attack it in anger!

My garage (and I) allowed several days, not least because it has to be done at various temperatures. They also ordered in various bits (fittings, clamps etc.) when doing the FL that they expected to need when dismantling and reconnecting the exhaust.

As it happened Audi left these bits out, just sending the gearbox-related parts and fluids and everything was in such good condition it came apart cleanly so they reused it all.

Mine needed a downpipe removing I believe - the clearance is less on an S8 than an RS6 as the pipes need to be routed away from the aluminium structures more so than with steel, so they hug the box quite tightly.

Thanks for all the advice people. Downpipes are coming off and new brackets will be put back on as part of the process.

I'm now in that stage of car ownership where you have to start fettling it to put all the silly little things right that haven't been addressed. New fuel tank straps, a new foglight, new wipers, bushes, sidelight etc… A bit spendy initially but worth it for satisfaction and peace of mind.
