Default Bit of a connundrum

You may not be aware, but my dad passed away on the 16th May unexpectedly in hospital aged 74.

I've been left with a decision to make with regards his car which I have been using on and off since he went into hospital.

He bought the car at 3 months old in 2009, and he has been the owner ever since. My mum does not drive, my brother has a company car and my sister can only drive Autos due to a shoulder injury.

We need to sell his car, but my mum said why not keep his and sell the Audi. Both cars value wise are very similar. Its very tempting, his car is diesel, low mileage (33K) and I've known the car and driven it regularly since he bought it.

Mine: 2004 Audi A8 D3 3.7 Q, 132K miles, 280BHP.
His: 2009 Skoda Fabia 1.4PD TDi, 33K miles, 80BHP.

His car has so many advantages over the Audi, £25 road tax, 80MPG, just been serviced, MOT'd, cambelt changed last year. I love the Audi, but his car has a sentimental attachment as well. I've had to insure his car in my name as his insurance was terminated when LV were notified of his death.

I've got a while to decide, early September I suppose is when it will be put up for sale or the Audi.

Ignoring the sentimental value which is hard I know from my own experience.

Which would you prefer to own and drive?

They are both widely difference cars in size, spec, drive and price per mile.

Me personally I'd keep the A8, sell the Fabia.
I prefer the spec level, drive and possibly the longevity of the A8 over the Fabia.
I'm not a fan of small cars, I just feel cramped in them.
Unless you're happy with the Fabia and prefer it over the A8.

So sorry to hear of your loss.

But, as to the 'dilema', I tend to agree with Scott. Unless you're driven by financial neccessity, then keep the A8.

But this is probably not the right forum for impartial advice!

Sorry for your loss, mate...

One other possible way forward, though. Sell both and buy a more recent 8 with the proceeds?

Now that's the best answer!

One of the things to do is to establish the marginal cost of owning one over the other including depreciation costs too. Choose a period such as 3years which given the mileage/age of the cars is probably realistic. You will probably find that the answer is a lot closer than you think.

The fact that you shared this "dilemma" with members of this forum shows where your heart is.

There might be a better one.

Sell them both and buy 2 D2s!

Manny, I'm so sorry mate. I really I am, I went through similar thing when my dad was murdered couple of years ago.

You've got a tough call to make. I agree with sentimental value, it's your dad's car on the end of the day. I do really like idea of selling both cars and buying better/newer D3, maybe more economical if that bothers you, and because it's partially bought from your Dad's car money, you will keep that sentimental value with new car. It's not the same what driving his car, but driving an A8 it's not the same what driving Fabia.
Another thing, you've got two A8s, there is a good reason I believe why you've chosen cars from the executive range not hatchback.
If you wanted a hatchback you would have one, but not comfort and class is most important for all the people, sometimes sentimental value beats it all.
Remember, there is nothing wrong with selling the car and using the money to buy a newer or better one, ask yourself if your Dad would mind it or not.

Tough call as mentioned earlier, but you've got to go with your instinct.

Whatever you decide it will be the right choice

I had a similar conundrum when my father died, a few years ago.
However, in my case the main emotional attachment to the car had been his, not mine, as I hardly ever drove it. Luckily my niece (his granddaughter) was in need of a similar car at the time and she ran it until it was pretty much worn out.

We have 2 cars (see signature) and the small one (Focus) is a handy local runabout, the S8 gets used for longer trips or when we need 2 at the same time (once or twice a week, but probably avoidable in all honesty).

So, consider two things:
1. Do you have a direct emotional attachment to the car having used it, or is that just a side-effect of other feelings?
2. Why not keep both, you can probably insure and maintain them both for not much more extra than the A8 petrol you'll save when you use it?

2016 Volvo V40 T5 Cross Country (4WD) with ALL the toys including adaptive cruise etc. etc. Osmium Grey with Blonde/Charcoal leather interior. Polestar performance "optimisation". (Even rarer than a D2 S8!) Oh, and a brand new engine at just under 30,000 miles on the factory one!
Finally: gone, but not forgotten.....
1998 D2 PF S8. Agate Grey/Platinum. Every option (I think) except electric rear seats, Tiptronic steering wheel, ski hatch, towbar & dimming door mirrors.
e.g. Cruise control, NavPlus/TV, Bose, GSM, Xenons, Solar roof, Parking sensors, Alcantara/leather everywhere of course. (internal dimming mirror added later)
1998 (very early) Ford Focus 1.8 Zetec; ABS/TCS, Heated screen/mirrors, Aircon. Added Auto-dim mirror, Leather seats, Trip computer, Cruise control, OEM Ford SatNav with CD changer.
And before that a lot of Rover 800s, a few oddities, a lovely Triumph Dolomite 1850HL with Overdrive and way back in my schooldays an Austin Seven aka Mini 850!
