Default Audi servicing and oil level

So today I had an MOT with Audi Norwich, car passed

They also did their car check service and noted that the engine oil was only at 25% full. They duly topped it up for me (probably with my oil in the boot as it wasn't invoiced for)

However, I checked the oil level this morning before going for the MOT. The car was cold and previously used yesterday, so the oil had 14+ hours to settle in the sump, and the dip stick reading was 2 or 3mm above max.

I did question them and they responded with that it should be checked after running. But surely this will give a false reading on the dip stick as oil is elsewhere in the system?

I'll give it an hour or two before I'll go and read the dip stick to check it's not overfilled..

Was the car level prior to your reading?

It's been debated since the engine was brought to our grubby hands but I usually check mine at the forecourt after filling up and paying, as far as I'm concerned that's good enough.

The reason for that is my drive is on a slope so no point in checking it at the house.

I never over fill it and normally lives around a few mm of the full mark.

You want to check oil level when engine is up to operating temperature as the oil expands when heated up, some oils more than others but give it 5-10min after turning engine off so that oil can flow back to the sump.

The S5 has a digital readout (I've added an old fashioned dipstick too!) and it only allows you to check it electronically when the oil has warmed up - you have to leave it to settle for 2 minutes before the reading is considered accurate.

On the S8 I don't find it moves much between services and generally just check it cold.....
